Meet Sudie Rakusin

I am a visual artist, author, publisher, feminist, vegan, and animal advocate. Born and raised in Washington, DC, I currently reside in Hillsborough, NC. I received my BFA in Painting from Boston University and my MFA in Painting from University of Arizona.

I create environments that are lush and surreal, rich with color, texture and pattern. Many of my works contain sculpted papier-mâché features and beadwork, which push my 2-D work into a 3-D realm. My work includes pen and ink drawings, papier-mâché sculptures, vessels, bowls, collage, abstracts in cold wax and oil, and 3-dimensional oil on canvas paintings featuring women and animals. I have created reproductions of my work to make art more accessible. These reproductions include journals, coloring books, notecards, stickers, games and more. I also create fabric designs from my fine art work. From these original fabrics, I am offering unique goods designed by me and my team which include scrunchies, sachets, tablecloths, kitchen towels and potholders.

Being an animal activist and feminist, my artwork flows from what moves me and from where I find beauty: women, animals, the earth, color, pattern and light. It represents the deep connection I feel with these elements. I believe my creations are the best part of me. Art is where I go for refuge, replenishing, and how I pay homage to what sustains me. Through my artwork I envision and create the world as I would like it to be – a place where harmony exists between animal and human.
